It’s a beautiful Friday to be absorbed in the newest releases of Afrobeats, Afropop, Highlife, Rap, and R&B. Based on our well-refined taste, here are this week’s New Music Friday selections.
Asake – Lungu boy
Asake completes his trifecta with Lungu Boy. The party and jolly good times that began on his past albums appear to be over. Lungu Boy takes on a more emotive cohesiveness, and Asake follows this plot all the way, with but a few exceptions. This is possibly why “Fuji Vibe” was designated as a bonus track. On Lungu Boy, if Asake is not musing about existence, he’s expressing deep emotions about a lover in Spanish. Lungu Boy showcases Asake’s incredible range and what he’s really capable of.
Standout Tracks: Start, MMS, My Heart, Worldwide, Skating, Active, Suru, Mentally.
Darkoo – Favourite Girl ft. Rema
On this remix of Darkoo’s perfectly made track, Rema blends a dancehall groove into the track with his signature melody as an Afrobeats artist. And if you’re wondering where in your distant past you’ve heard the rhythm of “Favourite Girl” from, it sampled Brick & Lace 2007 “Love Is Wicked.”
Kaestyle – Dealer ft. Kizz Daniel
Kaestyle teams up with one of Nigeria’s preferred and cherished Afropop artists Kizz Daniel to deliver a remix of his hit song “Dealer.” The remix for Dealer was first teased on July 28th and garnered a positive reception. So, it makes sense that it is being officially released as a record and not one of those pieces of music we’ll never get.
Show Dem Camp, The Cavemen, Nsikak David – No Love in Lagos
Alternative rappers Show Dem Camp, contemporary highlife duo The Cavemen, and Nigerian guitarist and producer Nsikak David all team up to create an exquisite project titled “No Love in Lagos.” The project takes you as a listener on a familiar—if you’re not new to their individual music—but unique musical trip. For the weekend, you’ll want to get lost in this.
Standout Tracks: Fall, Buga, OMFTR, Blessings, Train, Sudden Day.
Stonebwoy – Pray for Me ft. Wyclef Jean
On Pray For Me, Stonebwoy highlights how difficult life can be. He encourages tenacity in the face of adversity on the chorus, while rapping in patois on the daily societal challenges that humanity endure and have to deal with. Wyclef Jean doesn’t stray far from the subject; his rap verse compliments Stonebwoy’s delivery, and they create a moving track.
Slyjay – Uthando ft. Dj Drika, Nosy Lee
The elements of an amapiano tune all come together and marinade in Nosy Lee’s soulful vocals. The resulting effect on listeners is euphoric.
