It all starts with the Music. The sound of that beautiful vibration that rings on the wall of our eardrums and gift us a pleasant feeling. That phenomena that stimulates our spirits and bring us to our core. But beyond the Music, there exists an entire industry, which is further divided into different parts and structures. When it comes to division, there is only one of such divisions that is relevant to the ‘Emergent’ we are covering on this article.
Toluwalade Aromolaran is a Nigerian Singer and Songwriter who has been turning heads in the industry with just 6 months into his career. Born on the 30th of October, 2004; BuTaSkOcH as he is popularly known had a first glimpse of his talent at a very young age. However, he didn’t act on it until his time at the Air Force Military school in Jos. “Music became my ‘copium’, because that place is hell!” He tells us at Afromixx about the difficulties of managing the military activities and secondary school.
It is an unspoken truth that in every Music Industry, there exist a class of the highly venerated. A class of those geniuses who exists in the shadows, but have a significant presence in the industry. Enigmas whose name induces goosebumps and a God-like respect at the mention of it. We are talking about the Jesse Jags, the Tay Iwar, Bez Idakula, Asa, and so on. Artists who seem to be there and not there at the same time. Whose name silently commands respect in the hearts of their contemporaries. Whether this Emergent will dwell in this class, only the future can tell us. But for now, We bring you BuTaSkOcH on this issue of Afromixx The Emergent.
His style and sound can be said to be a beautiful blend of depth and divine melodies. “I don’t believe I have gotten to my unique sound. I feel I am still experimenting.“. He explains how he categorizes his sound. “I like to call it ‘fluid’ as it is ever adapting. I Started out with Neo-Soul and R&B. But now it is a mixture of Neo-Soul and Jazz, with elements of other genres coming in”.
BuTaSkOcH is a vessel of impeccable notes and rhythm. What’s more impressive is his substance. He seems to have perspectives, and that means he has a lot of things to say. Couple this with his songwriting, delivery, diction, and his classical versatility, then you will understand how much of a peerless talent we have on our hands, especially in the Nigerian Music Industry. Given who and what he is, it Is no wonder that Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers are as his biggest influence.
Away from his Musical abilities, BuTaSkOcH seem to be very soft spoken and articulate. He possesses the traits of the average generational talent. Which means he holds the tendency to be positively obsessed with things he believes in. He also wields the aura of the revered enigmas — those who are not fully understood because of the mystique they project, but whose talent are usually talked about in places where other talents are seated.
BuTaSkOcH’s first-ever body of work, ‘INQUISITIONE’ was released in January 2024, and it has opened so many doors for him within 6 months of his career — a feat he never saw coming. “INQUISITIONE was a Demo tape. It was not even mixed properly. It was a project which I intended to use for the sole purpose of introducing myself to the world. For me, it was a coming of age. An announcement of my coming”.
‘Inquisitione’ is a Latin word that translates to search. He said, “The concept of my E.P was formed around a character who has come into a new journey. And he is living through all the experiences that one has to face in life. Experiences like self-realization, relationship with people, expression of grief, and so on.”. With his first E.P, he hopes to be able to challenge people’s mind to sit and think things through. He hopes to be able to show people that it is possible to go do whatever you want to do, even when no one is doing it.
Quite shockingly, despite all the attention BuTaSkOcH is currently getting, he is not pressured about it in any way. More than ever, he is ready to go and show the world that he exists. For him, doing music is not necessarily about blowing up; instead, he finds it fascinating that one can make a whole lot of money with doing music properly, and he is looking forward to doing just that.
“Fans can look forward to phase 2. I talk about the phase two a lot on my Instagram; and that is because ‘INQUISITIONE’ was a demo like I said. My coming projects will be full of amazing collaborations. My fans should expect to be Amazed”. BuTaSkOcH has a couple of drops scheduled for 2024 — a couple of singles, and a mixtape with his collectives is sure to drop. BuTaSkOcH hopes to leave a legacy by the time he is done. “I want people to be able to look back long after I am dead, and genuinely say BuTaSkOcH got me through this.” He says, as he came to the end of our interview with him.
It is the start of a new journey for BuTaSkOcH, and you should hang on and get ready for the wild ride. We are genuinely rooting for him, and we hope to be here to witness the creation and evolution of his legacy. Pending when that comes to fruition, check out BuTaSkOcH’s debut E.P here.
