Chike, Spinall, Blaqbonez, Niniola on this week’s New Music Friday

The highlight of weekends, aside from not having to worry about work, is definitely the end of the week’s new releases. Shall we share a toast to this week’s new music Friday? Now before you begin those chores, as is our ritual, here are our picks from Friday’s new releases you can listen to while working.

Chike – Son of Chike

If you’ve been a fan of Chike since his debut album ‘Boo of the Booless’, you’re in for a treat this weekend. Chike creates magic by sticking to the template of his debut, delivering slow romantic songs in English, Pidgin, and his Igbo dialect in ‘Son of Chike‘. There are some tracks that feature the now-dominant sound of the log drum, but Chike executed such a production flawlessly. If you think yourself to be one who genuinely yearns, you should give this album a listen. Featured guests such as Olamide, Ladipoe, and Qing Madi contributed their artistic brilliance to the album.

Standout Tracks: Unto You, Apple, Ego Oyinbo, Someone, Not Your Daddy, Your Loss, One Day.

Spinall ft. Omah Lay, Tyla – One Call

Dj Spinall collaborates with Omah Lay and Tyla for the release of his first single in 2024. Produced by P.prime, the song features Omah Lay’s vocals, which as usual borders on melancholy and melody. Even on upbeat songs, you still get that feel from Omah Lay. Tyla delivers her verse with vocals you will savor.

Niniola ft. Pheelz – Formula

The queen of Afro-house, Niniola adds another song to her discography. With no obvious contender in sight, she maintains her status as the queen of bounce, track after track. Pheelz produced the song, and his delivery results in a brilliant synergy with Niniola. It appears they had one more in the bag after they both collaborated on ‘Fever,’ off Pheelz 5-track EP.

Blaqbonez – Fire on Me

Chocolate City’s star artist, Blaqbonez, appears to be caught in a hilarious shift from his anti-love persona to something we’re only beginning to learn about. Blaqbonez is well-known for his anti-love stance, having released an album titled ‘Sex over Love’, and a deluxe version of the project. He’s organised ‘conventions’ where he performed songs from the project and warned fans about the dangers of love. The rollout for this new era started on July 13th, and with this new song, we’re seeing Blaqbonez transition from a ‘Heartbreaker’ to a lover boy so deep in love that he feels like he’s on fire.

Johnny Drille – Count my Blessings

Here with another general-audience piece of music, you could listen to Johnny Drille’s ‘Count My Blessings’ on your way to church with family. The song conveys a message of gratitude and happiness over worry. The feel-good tune also features label boss Don Jazzy’s backing vocals.

Gabzy ft JayO, Odeal – Too Fine

Gabzy links up with Jayo and Odeal to make a record that meets expectations. The three British-Nigerian R&B singers known for their sometimes flirtatious music thought it a good idea to team up and release a song together for the first time to their female-dominated fanbase. With the release of Too Fine, starting a boy band would be a welcomed idea.
