It’s the weekend, and you deserve to relax after a long week of toil. While we do understand how costly it is to go outdoors and have fun, we’ve chosen to come up with some Netflix movie and series recommendations to make staying at home for the weekend enjoyable and less depressing.
Áfàméfùnà
After his friend is found dead, a prominent man is questioned by the police about their complex history together in the Igbo apprenticeship system. Áfàméfùnà underscores the significance of honesty and integrity. It also depicts the apprenticeship culture of the Igbos and the concept of brotherhood amongst the Igbos.
Blood Vessel
Brought together by chance, six people fleeing a town devastated by oil pollution stow away on a mysterious ship, not realizing the danger that awaits. The film, directed by Moses Inwang, is set in the Niger Delta and was shot mostly on a ship. The dialogue is primarily in Ijaw. Blood Vessel explores themes of love, family, and spiritualism.
Swallow
Waylaid by life’s pressures in 1980s Lagos, Nigeria, Tolani becomes involved in drug smuggling with her streetwise friend and must face fallout. Swallow is based on the novel by Nigerian-American novelist Sefi Atta. It is directed by Kunle Afolayan and takes place in 1980s Lagos. Swallow draws up social themes such as middle-class poverty, corruption, and misogyny.
Òlòturé: The journey
A journalist goes undercover as a prostitute to expose human trafficking in Lagos, and discovers a world of exploited women and ruthless violence. Oloture: The Journey is the sequel to the film Oloture. The limited series continues where the prequel stops. If you’ve yet to watch the prequel, you might want to start there.
Supacell
In South London, a group of normal people suddenly develop superpowers, and the only apparent connection between them is that they are all Black. But the cause of their abilities is more than that. High emotions frequently trigger their powers, as shown by the glint of yellow in their eyes. Their superhero partnership begins when they encounter each other at a drug house. The series Supacell is intriguing, powerful, and concludes on a melancholy note. Grab a tissue.
Dark October
After being accused of theft, four university students in Nigeria are killed in a mob attack that sparks nationwide outrage. Dark October is based on a true story produced by Linda Ikeji, while Toka McBaror directed it. This may be distressing and elicit feelings such as wrath, sympathy, and grief. If you’re an emotional person, you may drop a tear or two.
