The Nigerian music industry is blessed with top prominent female players in the DJ field as we’ve seen many female DJs making waves and a name for themselves and also giving hope to other young girls out there who want to become a DJ in a male-dominated industry.

The Nigerian music entertainment scene is growing in leaps and bounds by the day and we have seen women contributing to this rapid growth every day. We’ve gone past the era where they were on the sidelines or behind the scenes and marginalized. Now they’ve proven that they can outdo their male counterparts and thus a level playing field is being offered to women in the industry.

1.   DJ Switch

Born Obianuju Catherine Udeh, DJ Switch is one of Nigeria’s finest disc jockeys with her footprints spread all over the entertainment industry. She’s not just a disc jockey but a songwriter and singer as well. However, the wheels of steel come first for her.

She first shot into the limelight when her music group “The Pulse” won the2009 edition of Star Quest – a reality music show organized by the beer brand “Star”. The group would later release a viral single “So Tey” in which they featured  American fluid rapper, Busta Rhymes on the remix.

DJ Switch won the Glo X-Factor – another talent hunt show put together by Nigeria’s first and sole indigenous network provider Globacom Nigeria Limited. She coasted to victory as the first winner of that competition. The victory then earned her a recording deal with Sony Music before she began working with the sensational music duo Psquare who were part of the Glo X factor endorsement train.

She’s been with the Psquare group ever since and even now that the group has gone solo she worked for Peter Okoye as his official DJ.

She was recently at the forefront of the END SARS protest that rocked Nigeria which became life-threatening for her, causing her to go on exile to Canada who granted her stay in their country.

2   DJ Cuppy

Florence Ifeoluwa Otedola known professionally as DJ Cuppy is a Nigerian disc jockey, singer, songwriter, and producer. She’s also a famous social media celebrity but that’s a side gig as she is better known for her work as a proficient Disc Jockey.

She is the daughter of Nigerian billionaire, Femi Otedola and the second of his three daughters.

When she’s not down on the wheels mixing, she’s in the studio recording songs and has some very cool jams to her name like “Abena” featuring Kwesi Authur and “Gelato” featuring Zlatan.

Cuppy became proficient at her craft that she became too visible to go unnoticed coupled with the fact she’s always on the news for one reason or the other. She holds a Master’s Degree in Music Business from the University of New York and is currently in London where she recently bought a home.

The Billionaire disc jockey has come under heavy criticism on social media for doing crappy songs and has been advised severally to quit music, but she seems unperturbed by her critics and is still in the game hot as ever.

3.   DJ Nana

Born Nanayat Abedoh in 1990, DJ Nana is both a disc jockey and a media public figure. She hails from Kogi State, Nigeria but was bred in Lagos where she had her secondary education and subsequently bagged a degree with the National Open University of Nigeria.

The former protege of DJ Jimmy Jatt got her start in 2009 but her big break came when she won the first Airtel/Bacardi Cool FM DJ Competition in 2011 and won it again in 2012. This shot her to the lucid lights of fame. She is one of the most celebrated female DJ’s in Africa and has been featured on CNN.

DJ Nana is the official DJ for Alibaba’s “Seriously” show which is aired on the NTA Network every week on Sundays. She has worked with some famed acts in the music industry like Timaya, Seyi Shay Tiwa Savage, and many others.

4.   DJ Lambo

This list will be incomplete without the famous Olawunmi Okerayi a.k.a DJ Lambo. Born to a Disc Jockey father, it was very easy for her to take after her dad and do way better than him on the wheels.

She began her career as a professional disc jockey in 2008 starting as an On-Air Personality and hypeman with some radio stations in Abuja. She would rise from that step into a prominent disc jockey in Nigeria and later did a single titled “Drank”. DJ Lambo is signed under Chocolate City one of the foremost indigenous record labels in Nigeria and was once the President of Choc Boi Nation (CBN) in 2017. The CBN is a label imprint of Chocolate City. She is currently the President of Chocolate City after M.I Abaga stepped down.

She has performed at the Big Brother Naija reality TV party on three occasions, 2018, 2019, and 2020, performed at the Smirnoff Nigeria International Women’s Day Celebration, Smirnoff House Party, and Heineken’s Formula 1 Party.

5.   DJ Frizzie

Born Frances Higgwe in Rivers State, Nigeria, DJ Frizzie is a professional disc jockey and one of the most outstanding female DJs in the entertainment industry. She’s a graduate of Environmental Engineering from the University of Port Harcourt and she also has a Masters Degree in the same field from a university in the UK.

She started her career professionally in 2010 and is the official DJ of Nigerian sensational Dance Hall singer, Mr 2Kay.

She’s been featured on MTV Base Official Club Chart and is both a Disc Jockey, Pop artiste, and record producer.
